Gaucho [note 1] is the denomination used to name the characteristic inhabitant of the plains and adjacent areas [note 2] of Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil (Río Grande del Sur), also by Chilean Patagonia (Province of Palena , Region of Aysén and Region of Magallanes), in the southern region of Bolivia in the entire department of Tarija [1] and the Chuquisaqueño chaco, in the course of the seventeenth century until the middle of the nineteenth century. He was identified by his condition as a skilled horseman and by his link with the proliferation of cattle in the region, in addition, by the economic and cultural activities derived from it, especially the consumption of meat and the use of leather.

Regarding their occupation, the labor systems imposed by some landowners after independence gave shape to the particular patronage regime of the field laborer. And as for their way of life, they had a pseudo nomadic style.

The gaucho woman has traditionally been called “china” (from Quechua: girl and, by extension, female), [2] “paisana”, “guaina” (in the northern littoral region), “gaucha” and, “garment ».
