The Great Murga

Murga is, on the one hand, a choral-theatrical-musical genre, and on the other, the name given to the groups that practice it. In Uruguay it is usually performed at Carnival by a choir of between 13 and 17 people with the musical accompaniment bass drum, cymbals and snare drum.

History

The word murga has its origin in Spain. The origin of the genre, according to the definition of the regulations of the Official Contest of Carnival Groups, occurs in 1909, when a group of zarzuela arrived in Uruguay.
